Today we gather to celebrate the life of Elton Hendree, a man whose journey was marked by faith, family, service, and hard work.
Elton was born on January 25, 1944, in Sardis, Mississippi, to the union of John Hendree and Florence Gibson. He grew up alongside his siblings—Robert, his twin sister Evelyn and Guy. Though he was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Evelyn, their memory remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Elton completed high school at South Panola Training School, and in 1965, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He was discharged from the Army in 1967.
On July 22, 1972, Elton married Claudette Washington, beginning a union that would span more than five decades. Together, they raised four children—Kevin, Susan, Stacye, and Chris—instilling in them the values of love, perseverance, and faith. His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Elton dedicated 41 years of service to General Motors, working at the St. Louis and Wentzville plants until his retirement in 2008. Yet retirement did not slow him down. For many years, Elton operated a lawncare business, and even after leaving General Motors, he continued to work with the same diligence and care that defined his character.
Beyond his professional life, Elton’s greatest devotion was to God. He was a longtime elder at Believers Chapel Bible Church, where he served faithfully and humbly. His service extended beyond the church, as he worked with Set Free Ministry at the Potosi Correctional Center for nearly 20 years, sharing the Gospel to those serving in prison.
On November 29, 2025, Elton entered heaven, leaving behind a legacy of love and faith. He is survived by his devoted wife, Claudette; his children Kevin (Monica), Susan, Stacye, and Chris (Marisa); six grandchildren—Shannan, William, Michae’la, Taylor, Jared, and Marissa; three great-grandchildren—Hunter, Ivy, and Willow; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Elton’s life was a testament to the power of service—service to God, to family, to community, and to country. He lived with integrity, kindness, and a quiet strength that touched everyone who knew him. Though he has gone to be with the Lord, his legacy lives on in each of us.
