Ethel Shelton Long, a retired Homer G. Phillips nurse, community activist, and real estate developer, passed away peacefully in her home on September 7, 2024 surrounded by family and friends. She was 88. Ethel was known for her dedication to helping others and making a positive impact in her community.
Ethel's accomplishments included rehabbing multiple houses in North Saint Louis, showcasing her passion for revitalizing neighborhoods and providing affordable housing options. She graduated from the Homer G. Phillips School of Nursing as the second in her class, demonstrating her commitment to excellence in her field.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ethel was married for 35 years to Wilbert Long Sr. (former Chief Juvenile Officer of St. Louis city) and enjoyed traveling to various destinations in the United States and Europe with her family. She had a love for gardening and working with civic organizations, where she could make a difference in the lives of those around her.
She leaves to cherish her memory: five children: Melita, Melinda, Melissa Beyah, Wilbert Jr. and Wade Sr.; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two aunts: Florida Womack and Ora Davis, and a host of uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Ethel will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to serving others. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and community involvement that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
A funeral mass will be held in honor of Ethel Shelton Long at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3519 North Fourteenth Street 63107, where friends and family can come together to celebrate her life and the impact she made on the world around her. The mass will be held at 9:30am on Saturday September 21st. Ethel will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
