Florence entered this life on October 16, 1948, in Osceola, Arkansas, to the union of Ellen Knighten and Willie B. Knighten. The family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Florence was raised. She attended Eugene Fields Elementary School. After graduating, she went on to O'Fallon Technical High School, where she majored in secretarial/clerical studies. Florence enjoyed dancing, cheerleading, and modeling.
After completing high school, she went into the workforce. Always trying to improve, do better, she worked full-time for Missouri State Employment Services for ten years. After leaving there, she went on to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for twenty and a half years. Finally, she was employed by Master Card International for ten years. During the time between leaving Missouri State Employment Services and Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, she joined the Missouri Air National Guard active duty. But, not wanting to possibly have to leave her young daughter Isis, she went into the reserves. There she served for and was Honorably discharged after twenty-four years. And (if that wasn't enough) she took a tax preparer's course from H&R Block. There she learned how to prepare income taxes. Florence even managed to have a few clients too.
Florence was very family oriented. Family was special to her. She also cared deeply for her friends and high school classmates. "Flo", (as she was sometime called), was the kind of person that if you needed help with something reunions (family, class, neighborhood) various tasks, large or small, she'd be the one to call. With Florence on your side, in your corner, you had a rock! a.k.a "Sarge" (Smile).
She was united in holy matrimony to Victor R. Mitchell on July 31, 1988. A happy day, with the ceremony in the backyard of their home; attended by kins and friends alike.
The loving, caring and thoughtful being/spirit that was Florence has gone. Gone to be with others like her...angels. Florence departed this life on May 6, 2024. She'll be welcomed home to heaven into God's arms. There she can be reunited with her father, Willie B.; mother, Ellen; one sister, Betty Hall; and her only brother, Willie B. Jr.
