Martha Monique Gillespie-Stewart, passed away on September 14, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and connection. Born in St. Louis, MO, on September 12, 1985 to the late William E. Gillespie and Glenda L. Cherry, Martha was the heart of her family, embodying unconditional love and a commitment to nurturing meaningful relationships. She was a woman who cherished life's experiences, valuing time spent with family and friends above all else.
Martha graduated from Kirkwood High School and continued her academic journey at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where she earned her undergraduate degree and became a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She later obtained a Master of Health Administration from Webster University, further expanding her expertise. Martha then pursued her legal education at Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, LA, where she earned her Juris Doctorate.
Martha began her legal career as a state attorney for Child Services in Jefferson City, MO, then relocated to Tennessee, where she served as an attorney with the Tennessee Department of Children Services. She was passionate about the work she did, dedicating herself to advocating for the well-being of children and families. Over the years, Martha was promoted multiple times and received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of her dedication and hard work. However, no professional accomplishment could ever surpass her devotion to her family, whom she considered her greatest legacy.
In 2017, Martha married the love of her life, Edward Mark Stewart II, and on January 22, 2018, they welcomed their son, Edward Mark Stewart III, affectionately known as "Macaroni." Martha's pride in her family was immeasurable, and her greatest joy came from the moments shared with them.
In addition to her professional success and family life, Martha was an avid traveler (and planner) who made it a mission to see the world with her loved ones. Her travels were a reflection of her adventurous spirit and desire to create lasting memories.
Martha is survived by her devoted husband, Edward Mark Stewart II; her beloved son, Edward Mark Stewart III; her mother, Glenda L. Cherry; and her sisters: Patricia G. Hampton (husband, Jonathan Hampton), Torri D. Elliot (husband, Luther Elliott II), Sharonda Q. Gillespie, and Glenda V. Gillespie. She also leaves behind her grandmother, Annie W. Sims, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and coworkers.
Martha was the epitome of love, grace, and connectedness, and her light will continue to shine through the countless lives she touched. She lived an enriched life and leaves behind a legacy of love that will endure for generations.
Her family and friends will carry her memory in their hearts, cherishing the moments shared and continuing to honor the beautiful soul that was Martha Monique Gillespie-Stewart.
