Blessings and miracles do happen, such was the case on November 7, 1941, when a beautiful baby girl was born. Portia Bernice Whitmore was the first of fourteen children born to Royal and Zula Mae Worsham in Cotton Plant, Arkansas.
Portia attended grade school and high school in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. She graduated from Cotton Plant Vocational High School. Portia was united in marriage to Luther Whitmore, Jr. in 1963. To this union two sons, Michael and Maurice, were born. Both parents, Royal and Zula Mae Worsham, one son, Michael Whitmore, and two brothers, Don Worsham and Horace Worsham, preceded her in death. Portia confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cotton Plant, Arkansas under the leadership of Rev. D. R. Robinson. She later joined Olivet Missionary Baptist Church in Florissant, Missouri.
Portia was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was incredibly special, loving, and fun to be around. Her presence would light up the room, oftentimes being the “life of the party”. Portia’s charismatic humor and memorable laugh added joy and life-long memories to all who were touched by her endearing personality. She was always helpful, kind, and generous; such was the life of Portia Bernice Whitmore.
A trumpet blew, the angels sang, and God smiled, for she has now found eternal rest at last. No more pain. Portia departed this life peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Portia will be missed by all who experienced her kind and sweet spirit. Indeed, blessings and miracles do happen.
She leaves to cherish her memories; her devoted and faithful husband, Luther Whitmore of Florissant, Missouri, one son, Maurice Whitmore of Pine Lawn, Missouri, one granddaughter, Kennedi Green (Tahlee) of St. Louis, Missouri, one great-grandson, Tahlee Green, Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri, four brothers, Clarence Worsham (Clara) of McCrory, Arkansas, Roy Worsham (Chanti) of Florissant, Missouri, Denormis Worsham (Karen) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Claudell Worsham of Hensley, Arkansas, four sisters, Geraldine Worsham of Cotton Plant, Arkansas, Mary Carroll of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Laura Cunningham (Grady) of Little Rock, Arkansas, Bertha Norwood of Little Rock, Arkansas, a sister-in-law, Janie Hollister of Cotton Plant, Arkansas, and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.
