Richard George Hughes

Richard George Hughes was born on January 27, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri.  He was the only child of Richard S. Hughes and Juanita Hughes (who both preceded him in death).  He attended Lutheran Central High School, where his football career stamped him the name “Red Dog” He went on to attend the University of Missouri - St. Louis where he received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1967. He then received his Juris Doctor from St. Louis University School of Law in 1976.  Soon after, Richard began his almost 50-year career as an attorney. He began his own practice Harvey & Hughes in 1986, and later formed the renowned law firm, Caldwell Hughes and Singleton in 1990. Richard would retire from his own firm, Richard G. Hughes and Associates LLC in 2023.  Richard was a member of the National Bar Association, a lifetime member of the Mound City Bar Association, as well as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

On May 1, 1982, he married the love of his life, Michelle Flowers (who preceded him in death).  To this union, two wonderful children were born: Richard (Ricky) A. Hughes and Leslie N. Hughes, whom he was so proud of. 

Richard loved to spend time with his family the most. Practicing yoga, walking, running, hanging with his pet dog named Bree, and watching football were just a few of the activities that brought him great joy…oh and let’s not forget shopping on Amazon. Richard was always the flyest in the room and dressed to impress, from his shoes, jackets, hats, and jewelry. Not only was he an attorney at law for many clients, he also generously helped many family members and friends. His resilience, perseverance, strength, and courage were like no other, he surely made an impression on everyone he encountered.

Richard departed this life on October 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving children.

His legacy lives on through his children Ricky Hughes (Valerie) and Leslie Hughes, and grandchildren Hayden, Harlow, and Violet. He received great joy and pride from his nieces and nephews: Donielle, Demetrius, Demetrius Jr., Doni, Darla, and Delilah Grooms; Sherry and Larentz Boyd; and cousin, Dexter. Plus, a host of family and friends.
