Wilart Banks Obituary

Wilart Buster Banks, Sr., affectionately referred to as “Buster”, was born on January 6, 1945, at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri to the former Irlean Ausler and Sylvester Banks, both who preceded him in death. Together they reared seven (7) children: Leo, Wilart, Wilbur (Sonny), Raynell, Alice, Atherlene, and Joyce. He and his siblings also had 3 older siblings: Sylvester, Roy, and Lois. Wilart transitioned early Sunday morning, January 7, 2024, at 5:30am after celebrating his seventy-ninth (79th) birthday with family at the Brentwood Nursing & Rehab Center just the day before. It is believed that the celebration served as his sendoff; in that before God called him home, HE was faithful to Wilart’s heart in having him to say goodbye in a way that was pleasing to him. After all, we know that “Uncle Buster” loved a good party!

Wilart attended St. Louis City schools: Washington Elementary, Hadley Technical High School, and O’Fallon Technical High School. He attended Ranken Technical College, where he received his degree in Plumbing technology. Wilart became gainfully employed by General Motors straight out of high school, as a skilled tradesman (plumber/pipefitter) and enjoyed the fruits of his labor with a career that spanned over 30 years. He was also known as the first black skilled tradesman hired with the company.

Wilart married the former Vernisher Mae East on April 18, 1965, at Prince of Peace Baptist Church and they had four (4) children: Willetta Karice, Wilart Jr., Ericka Treniece, and Bria Janelle. Unfortunately, she preceded him in death.

Wilart joined Acacia Lodge #166 of the Masonic organization in November 1990. He was a Past Master upon his passing.

Over the years, Wilart sought to try his hand in marriage two additional times, with the former Fannie Mae Jones who preceded him in death. He also married the former Michelle Miller who also preceded him in death. In his marriage to Michelle Miller, Wilart helped to co-parent her children: Toneeko Miller, Meesha Miller, Jasmine Miller, Tiffany Miller, and Joseph Miller.

Wilart Buster Banks, Sr. is survived by his children; Kevin Williams (widowed), Willetta K. Graham (Darryl), Wilart Jr. (Lisa), Ericka T. Jefferson (widowed), Lisha C. Saddler (Ronald), and Bria J. Christmas (John); brothers Leo Banks (Lynn), Wilbur (Sonny) Banks (Annette), Raynell Banks (Jo Ann); sisters Alice Draper, Atherlene Frazier (James), and Joyce Gilliam (Greg); and a host of nieces, nephews; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; along with his bonus children and grandchildren.
